LET THE CHILDREN COME!

Let the children come. That is such a sweet invitation! I love to be with children. And I am so grateful for the children who share life with us.

Not long ago we started meeting at our RV Sunday mornings before going to worship. Our desire was to carve out time for adults, since most of our “planned programming” is with children. Four of us were in the middle of bible study and fellowship when we heard a knock at our door.  It was a sweet kindergarten-age friend from down the street. She saw our car and didn’t want to miss anything. She was dressed for the occasion with kitty cat-ear headband and a clip-on kitty cat tail.

We pulled up a chair for her, gave her a plate of breakfast food, and began to include her in our study and discussion. She listened eagerly. I showed her the scripture we were reading and asked her if she would like to read aloud. She read slowly but surely: “Do not fear, for I am with you.” (Isaiah 41:10)

When it was time to leave the RV and head to worship, she asked if she could please go with us. So we drove to her house, got permission, and headed to worship. Kitty ears and kitty tail still intact, we arrived and found a place to sit on the second row where distractions were few. We worshipped. She worshipped. When the pastor began to share, she took her bulletin and drew a picture of John, me, and a little girl with kitty ears and tail. She put a cross in the center and whispered as she drew: “Do not fear, for I am with you.” My heart nearly burst for joy.

Lord, don’t ever let me neglect to simply love the one You set before me! Let the children come, and let me have eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart wide open.  Let me experience Your love working in ways I can’t even imagine! Let Your love break me.

“Let the little children come to Me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 19:14
